February is American Heart Month

February is American Heart Month

February is right around the corner, meaning lots of love is in the air! Not only is February the month of love – it’s also American Heart Month, dedicating time to raising awareness about heart health and encouraging people to take steps toward a healthier heart.

Heart disease has been the leading cause of death in the United States for over 100 years. However, many risk factors are preventable. This month, Kore Cares wants to remind you and your family that small lifestyle changes can make a big impact.

Why Heart Health Matters

Did you know that your heart is the strongest muscle in your body? It is working nonstop to continuously pump blood and oxygen to your entire body, even while resting. Taking care of your heart not only supports your cardiovascular system, but also your overall energy, mood, and well-being.

High blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, poor diet, lack of exercise, and chronic stress can increase the risk of heart disease by weakening your most important muscle. While there are many risk factors for heart disease, all of these listed are well within our control.

Simple Ways to Show Your Heart Some Love

There is no need for a complete lifestyle overhaul. By just incorporating a few heart-smart habits, you can make all the difference:

  • More Movement: Try to aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity most days of the week, even walking will make all the difference!

  • Heart-Healthy Foods: Improving your diet can make a difference in more than just your heart! Try incorporating fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats.

  • Managing Your Stress: While easier said than done, managing stress can be a large factor in reducing cardiac events. Deep breathing, stretching, meditation, and short breaks can help reduce strain on your heart.

  • Know Your Numbers: Regularly checking your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels can help keep you in tune with your heart function.

  • Quit Smoking: If you do smoke, quitting can be a challenge, but it can also make the biggest difference in preventing Heart Disease.

Make Heart Health a Year-Round Priority

It is never too late to make a New Year’s resolution, let yours be improving your heart health! American Heart Month is a great time to make small lifestyle changes that will make a big difference. The goal is consistency throughout the year, creating a healthier, stronger you.
