National Nutrition Month: What Makes a Balanced Meal?

              March is national nutrition month! The theme for 2022 is “Putting your best fork forward” which promotes the idea that everyone has the tools needed to eat healthier and lead healthier lives. So, what makes a healthier meal and how do we achieve that balance?

We have all grown up learning the food pyramid which displays each food group and how much of each is recommended to consume per day with vegetables, fruits, etc. at the bottom with the most servings per day and foods higher in sugars and fats at the top with the least servings recommended per day. In recent years, this idea has made a turn to promoting a more balanced idea that is called My Plate. The My Plate diagram shows a plate that represents each of the three meals in a day and gives a general view of what amount of each food group is recommended for breakfast lunch and dinner.
